We’ve mentioned previously that throwing electronics like computers, fax machines, copiers, printers, scanners, televisions, and more out with the trash is legally banned in South Carolina. It still happens, unfortunately, and not just with residential areas throwing out an Xbox or a computer. There are still businesses who think it’s harmless to put dozens or even hundreds of outdated pieces of electronic equipment in the dumpster and hope for the best.
In our earlier post on what’s in electronic waste, we mentioned the risk of the toxic materials contained inside most electronics finding their way into local landfills, soil, and possibly even the groundwater. The long-term effects of these toxins in the environment hasn’t been completely researched, although many of the components (like mercury, for example) are known to be heavily, and at times fatally, toxic. While that points to dumping ewaste being a big risk, it’s not the only one you’re taking when you carelessly toss out electronics. You’re also risking being caught breaking the law, and that could cost your business money.
According to the Department of Health and Environmental Control for South Carolina, businesses caught dumping electronic waste illegally are liable under the same laws that maintain the illegal dumping of anysolid waste. Deciding it’s not worth the time to dispose of your ewaste legally could result in either a civil or an outright criminal violation, costing your business up to $10,000 a day in penalties and liability for the cleanup required to remove all the dumped electronics.
Becoming known as a company that has been held criminally liable in the state of South Carolina can easily put a scar on the reputation of a business. On the other hand, letting it be known that your company is proactive in ensuring all outdated or unused electronics are disposed of in an environmentally-safe manner could be utilized to spread the word about your business being responsible and eco-friendly.  That’s why it’s so important to work with an ewaste recycling partner! Press releases, newsletters or news articles, and company showcases could all be used to help positive word-of-mouth information make its way throughout local Upstate South Carolina communities.
Don’t try to skirt the law – it’ll catch up with you in the end. No business owner or IT department wants to end up writing checks for cleanup costs and penalties that could have easily been avoided through a partnership with a dedicated electronic waste recycling business like ours. Electronic Asset Recycling is based out of Greenville, South Carolina, and we’re happy to work with companies all over the Upstate as well as those located in our remote office locations. We’d love to partner with you long-term to ensure that your electronic waste disposal is done safely, legally, and responsibly every time. We’ll take all the liability for your ewaste off your hands, with just one call. You can reach us by phone at (800) 746-1823 or request a pickup online today!
