While composting has been around for many years, our population is just now catching on to how useful it can really be. If you were to ask any environmentalist about composting, it’s likely that you would get a slew of giant words that basically mean it’s great for the environment and everyone should do it! This is all true! At Ever Green Environmental, we want to break it down for those who aren’t environmentalists and are just looking for ways to invest in themselves and the environment around them. Here are three interesting composting tips that you’ve likely never heard of!
1 • It Does Not Have to Stink
When polled about composting, the average household argued that they opt out of composting simply because of the smell. Here’s a tip for all composting curious residents: if you have the proper materials, it doesn’t have to stink! The goal is to create an aerobic condition where microorganisms can break down your scraps without causing bad odor. How do you create an aerobic condition? Color-code your compost! Each layer added to the compost should be two to three parts brown and one part green. By brown, we mean things like shredded newspapers, papers, dead leaves, napkins, etc. By green, we mean fruits and vegetables that have gone bad or scraped off of a plate, breads, coffee grounds, grass clippings. If you have too much of one thing, place it in a bag in the freezer or stash it in a pail until it’s ready to go!
2 • Eggs-actly What We Need
A great compost pile should be a combination of many things placed in thin layers. If you are using eggs, crumbled eggshells are the perfect additive to make your compost rich in calcium. With the average American eating over 250 eggs per year, imagine what life would be like if we composted all those egg shells!
3 • Lasagna Composting
The standard for composting is having a bin that you continue to go to for compost. While that may work for some people, others have looked into gardening and composting in the same spot. Lasagna composting is an alternative to the normal ways in which you compost right in your garden. Build up your layers and leave it there for an entire six months without touching it. Then, plant right on top of your beautiful and lush garden site! Composting doesn’t get much easier than that!
